Gentleman Jack is an HBO series based on a real person named Anne Lister (1791-1840). Wikipedia calls her the first modern lesbian. In the show, Gentleman Jack wears black, a color reserved for men. The cut of her clothes is masculine, except for her floor-length skirts.

While she moves through 17th century England recognized and accepted as that eccentric Lister woman, Anne is unable to pursue, let alone realize the life mate she longs for. Anne is doing what she feels is right and making sure to own what’s hers -- in the most charming, forthright manner.

A child is born identified as female. They find themselves attracted to the same gender. They might be lesbian. They might be a straight transgender man. These may only be points on the greater gender spectrum. Societal norms, education, and resources may restrict their ability to fully understand this exact nature. And perhaps more importantly, how much does it matter to their life?

I don’t think Anne Lister is an activist. She certainly isn’t a feminist. She’s only a person trying to move through their world as best they can. And no, it doesn’t matter if they are a trans man. It’s just that I bought a PT Cruiser, and I seem to see them everywhere.
